Unfriend is in
Like every year, the New Oxford American Dictionary announces the Word of the year in November, and this year the honour goes to ‘unfriend’:
unfriend – verb – To remove someone as a ‘friend’ on a social networking site such as Facebook
Whereas the previous years were dominated by the ecologist trend, with the words hypermiling (2008), locavore (2007) and carbon neutral (2006), this year, technology got the upper hand, with 5 more nominees besides the winning word, like hashtag, intexticated, netbook, paywall en sexting.
Furthermore, the dictionary also noted many Twitter related world clusters this year, like tweeps, twitterature and tweepish. One that I didn’t yet know was ‘twitterhea‘: the unstoppable urge to tweet! But I do know some people who should be treated for that 😛
